Getting Started

What to expect at Open Sky Eugene:

We are a friendly group of meditation practitioners interested in learning sitting meditation, being part of a community and simply practicing mindfulness with others; we encourage you to accompany us in our meditation practice, dharma discussions and community.

We invite you to explore our diverse programs designed to help Oregonians of all traditions discover their inherent clarity, gentleness and humor.

Open Sky Shambhala provides a variety of ways for people to learn about Shambhala worldwide and start taking advantage of what we offer. Good places to begin include the following areas of our website:

About Shambhala. Get a general introduction to key aspects of the Shambhala global community, including vision, lineage, and span of activity.

What We Offer. Learn about our core offerings—meditation instruction and practice opportunities, a complete path of heart-mind training and more.

Open Public Sitting. All are welcome to meditate with us at our open public sittings.  In general we do not offer instruction at these times. If you are new to meditation or would like to talk to a Meditation Guide about your practice, we encourage you to come to Learn to Meditate and/or Meditation, Discussion and Dharma.  Please see the event calendar for dates and times (both held monthly).

Introductory Programs and Events. Receive an in-depth introduction to meditation by taking any of our introductory Way of Shambhala courses or weekend retreats. Or join us for any other public programs or events.

Community. Learn more about who we are, what we do, and how you can get involved.

Shambhala Vision.  Shambhala Vision is rooted in the principle that every human being has a fundamental nature of basic goodness. This nature can be developed in daily life so that it radiates out to family, friends, community and society.

Shambhala Lineage. The ancient kingdom of Shambhala was renowned for the compassion and wisdom of its leaders and citizens. According to the legend of Shambhala, these qualities were the result of unique teachings on enlightened society that the Buddha gave personally to King Dawa Sangpo, the first sovereign of Shambhala.

The Shambhala Principle. We humans have come to a crossroads in our history: we can either destroy the world or create a good future.

Shambhala In the World. Shambhala is a global network of people from all walks of life, dedicated to the principle that every human being has a fundamental nature of basic goodness.

Meditation.  Meditation is a natural state of the human mind—at rest, open, alert. The practice of meditation has been taught for over 2,500 years as a vehicle for realizing the beauty and magic of the ordinary world without aggression or manipulation.
